SUMMARY:Transforming Diabetes Research Across the Lifespan - Katie Page\, MD\, MS (UWMDI Director Candidate)
DESCRIPTION:The Division of Metabolism\, Endocrinology and Nutrition and the UW Medicine Diabetes Institute presents: Transforming Diabetes  Research Across the Lifespan \nDr. Page’s research program has two major components: (i) neuroendocrine regulation of appetite\, feeding behavior\, and glucose homeostasis; (ii) intergenerational transmission of obesity and diabetes. Her research has been recognized by Outstanding Investigator Awards from the Endocrine Society (2012)\, Western American Federation for Medical Research (2012)\, the American Diabetes Association Pathway Accelerator Award (2013)\, the American Heart Association (2014)\, and the Western Society for Clinical Investigation (2019). She has received external grant funding from the National Institutes of Health\, the American Diabetes Association\, the American Heart Association\, and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Her long-term vision is to identify mechanisms and markers of disease in people at high risk for diabetes\, whether related to in utero exposure to maternal metabolic disorders or other postnatal environmental influences\, and to develop at test interventions to prevent diabetes and its related complications. \nKatie Page\, MD\, MS \nAssociate Professor of Medicine | Vice Chief\, Division of Endocrinology\nDirector\, Diabetes and Obesity Research Institute\nKeck School of Medicine\nUniversity of Southern California \n  \nTuesday\, March 7\, 2023  | 4:00pm – 5:00pm PDT (VIRTUAL PRESENTATION) \nREGISTER HERE TO RECEIVE ZOOM LINK. \nPlease see flyer for more details. SUMMARY:A New Era of Diabetes Treatment: The Use of Human Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Islets - Jeffrey Millman\, PhD (UWMDI Director Candidate)
DESCRIPTION:The Division of Metabolism\, Endocrinology and Nutrition and the UW Medicine Diabetes Institute presents: A New Era of Diabetes Treatment: The Use of Human Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Islets \nDr. Jeffrey Millman is  an Associate Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at Washington University School of Medicine. He received his Ph.D. from MIT and completed his postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Douglas Melton at Harvard University. His current research is focused on synergizing both biomedical engineering and cell biology approaches to use stem cells for the study and treatment of diabetes. He is developing new approaches for the differentiation of insulin-producing islets from stem cells and improving their utility for cell replacement therapy and in vitro disease models. His innovations have been licensed to several biotechnology and startup companies in the diabetes space and resulted in one ongoing clinical trial. His laboratory is supported by the NIH NIDDK and JDRF\, and his scholarship has been recently recognized by awards from the JDRF\, American Institute of Chemical Engineering\, and the Biomedical Engineering Society. \nJeffrey Millman\, PhD \nAssociate Professor of Medicine\nDivision of Endocrinology\, Metabolism\, and Lipid Research\nAffiliate Faculty\, Department of Biomedical Engineering\nWashington University School of Medicine \n  \nTHURSDAY\, FEBRUARY 2\, 2023 \n8:00am – 9:00am PT \n  \nREGISTER HERE TO RECEIVE ZOOM LINK: \nPlease see attached flyer for more details. \nMillman_Seminar_Feb2023
