Analytic Core

Analytic Core

High quality measurements of analytes in complex mixtures play a vital role in basic and translational research in nutrition and obesity. Whether in serum, cell lysates, tissues, or urine, the quantification of small molecules and proteins allows investigators to compare different states to one another and draw conclusions based on carefully designed experiments in animals or in human populations. In recent years, a heightened emphasis has been placed on the integration of genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics in order to better understand the impact of spontaneous genetic polymorphisms and engineered mutations on nutrition, obesity, and their sequelae. Among the most important advances in analytical science for improved biomarker measurement include mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). The Analytic Core and Discovery Metabolomics Subcore of the UW NORC have a strong history of harnessing the power of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and NMR for the quantification of metabolomic biomarkers on behalf of our Affiliate Investigators (AIs), in some instances helping to define the state-of-the-art of the field and advancing nutrition- and obesity-related science.
